What is negabinary?
Negabinary is a positional number system with base −2. Like binary, it uses only the digits 0 and 1, but the place values alternate sign: 1, −2, 4, −8, and so on. This converter accepts either a decimal integer or a binary digit string and displays the base −2 representation.
Convert a value
- Choose Decimal or Binary as the input format.
- Enter a whole decimal number or a string containing only 0 and 1.
- Select Convert to see the negabinary result and the repeated-division steps.
For example, decimal 2 is 110 in base −2 because 1 × 4 + 1 × (−2) + 0 × 1 = 2. Negative values are represented without a separate minus sign.
Input limits
Decimal input must be a finite safe integer. Binary input is limited to 53 digits and must contain only 0 and 1. The converter uses JavaScript number arithmetic, so values outside the safe-integer range cannot be represented exactly. This is an educational conversion helper, not an arbitrary-precision calculator.
